Drop Duchy - Accessibility Spotlight
A Tetris-style roguelite meets an adorably relaxing, no-pressure, no-timer experience in Drop Duchy, where you build your very own duchy!
Build a breathtaking kingdom, one piece at a time, in Drop Duchy — a Tetris-inspired rogue-lite game with deck-building mechanics! We hailed a carriage for one Duke Duchington to try out this addicting game, and uh-oh — where did the time go!?
A Mental Health Trip To The Duchy
Drop Duchy is the debut title from Sleepy Mill Studio, a small indie team based in France. It’s a bold first impression with incredible replayability that makes it hard to put down, and thoughtful accessibility options in the Cognitive and Mental Health categories! Let’s dive in.
The game opens with a stunningly hand-drawn menu, and a relaxed atmosphere that never pressures the player. The options menu is available in the top-right corner and includes standard settings for Graphics, Audio, Controls, and Language. Drop Duchy supports both keyboard and controller play with remappable controls, and unique accessibility features that fit the game like Auto Speed Up and Speed Up Multiplier. Best of all, unlike traditional Tetris games that demand quick decisions, Drop Duchy has no time limits. So, sit back, enjoy the charming art style and soothing atmosphere, and craft your drop-dead gorgeous duchy!

On top of its wonderfully forgiving stress-free gameplay, ideal for cognitive accessibility, Drop Duchy also features a built-in encyclopaedia and tutorial, both accessible at any time from the main menu.
The encyclopaedia acts as a handy slideshow, letting you flip through key mechanics and refresh your memory on what each piece does. And if the encyclopaedia isn’t enough, the tutorial offers an easy-to-play game mode where you can practice (or re-learn) the mechanics at your own pace.
A Commitment To Ease
Now let’s get to the best part: the gameplay!
Drop Duchy keeps things wonderfully accessible with an easy reading level — no cryptic card text or head-scratching mechanics here. Everything is simple, clear, and easy to understand. Best of all, you can access the card glossary at any time to review all the cards (a whopping 110 unique cards!) you’ve obtained. We especially loved how clean and readable the card text is! The font choice is easy on the eyes and perfect for players of all ages.

Addicting Replayability
Playing multiple runs of Drop Duchy rewards you with crowns, which can be used to unlock new pieces, cards, and map locations! It’s well worth investing in the skill tree as it drastically changes your options with each playthrough.
And if you thought you could only play as a Duchy — think again! You can also unlock the Republic and the Order, two distinct factions that offer their own unique playstyles and strategies, adding even more depth and replayability to an already rich experience!

Build That Duchy!
Let’s get to the best part: building your Duchy!
Each run of Drop Duchy begins with a branching map offering different routes, a health bar, and various resources to collect, such as Wheat, Wood, Coins, and eventually — yes — Rocks! (Literal rocks. You’ll love them.) These resources are used to upgrade your cards and build a stronger deck.
Next, players are presented with choices for which path to take:
- Peaceful Regions have no enemies and offer abundant resources, but at the cost of boosting the final boss’s health.
- Hostile Regions, on the other hand, contain enemies, but leave the boss untouched.
As you progress through the skill tree using crowns earned from previous runs, you’ll unlock special regions on top of the Peaceful and Hostile ones like the University, Guild, Port, and Abbey. These unique stops add new layers of strategy and variety to the map! Progressing the skill tree also unlocks new tile types such as Rivers, along with Military, Production, and Technology Pieces.
- Military pieces (like the River Castle or Barracks) help you fend off enemies with bonuses based on where they’re placed.
- Production pieces (like the Fishery, Windmill, or Charcoal Kiln) boost your resource output and fuel your upgrades.
- Technology pieces offer passive bonuses, enhancing your Military and Production gains. They’re key to building efficient and powerful decks, especially for tackling tougher challenges!
Speaking of which, Drop Duchy features five difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Hard, Extreme, and Nightmare. Each difficulty must be unlocked by conquering the one before it, so you’ll need to prove your worth in Extreme mode before taking on Nightmare! It’s a clever balance of risk and reward that makes every decision meaningful, and every duchy uniquely yours!

Made A Mistake? No Stress!
Now that we’ve picked our region, it’s time to set up our deck!
Welcome to the Preparation Phase, a strategic moment that lets you preview the upcoming region. Here, you’ll see which pieces are available, how many of each you’ll get, and what types of enemy tiles you might face. During this phase, you can strengthen, swap out, or sell any of your building pieces. It’s a great opportunity to refine your deck and tailor your strategy before diving into battle.
And if things don’t go as planned? Don’t worry — Drop Duchy is incredibly forgiving. You can Reload Save at any point to return to the start of the battle if RNG wasn’t on your side, or a run just didn’t click. You can also take up to 70 points of overflow damage (a limit that can be increased with certain cards or skill tree upgrades) to power through a region if needed.
It’s all designed to keep the game approachable and enjoyable, even when the tiles don’t fall in your favor.

In addition to regular battles, you’ll also face boss battles at the end of each Act (there are three total). These encounters come with unique challenges, like red zones that change every round. Placing a tile on a red zone might grant the boss extra health or summon additional enemies. Choose your moves wisely!
Defeating a boss moves you into the next Act, and if you conquer the boss in Act III, you’ll win the run!
Winning a regular or boss battle lets you choose a new card as a reward! If you’re not satisfied with the options, you can reroll the three cards for a small fee. It’s well worth taking the time to build your deck and match your preferred playstyle!

A Love Letter To Cozy Gamers
All-in-all, Drop Duchy is a delightful blend of beloved genres that come together to create a cohesive and engaging experience! Building your duchy is as satisfying as it is addictive, and the charming art style (we especially loved seeing the Plains tiles transform into golden Fields) makes it a visual feast. With its approachable gameplay and age-friendly design, it’s the perfect game for cozy gamers who enjoy a low-stakes play! We couldn’t be more delighted by the thoughtful support it offers for Cognitive accessibility and Mental Health!
The success of Drop Duchy has also paved the way for future content. Sleepy Mill Studio has announced plans for a brand new faction, along with ongoing polish, balance updates, and quality-of-life improvements. We couldn’t be more thrilled to see indie games like this thrive, and Drop Duchy stands as a shining example of that success!
