Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 delivers the franchise's most robust accessibility features yet. The team here at AbleToPlay couldn't wait to dive in, and honestly? We're blown away. Activision upped their game when it came to making a high-octane shooter accessible to more players than ever before. Let's dive right in.

Genuinely Game-Changing Audio Experience

A standout accessibility triumph has to be the introduction of asymmetrical hearing compensation — a first for the Call of Duty franchise. This groundbreaking feature allows players with hearing loss to create custom audio profiles with individual settings for each ear. The feature was developed with veterans and players with hearing loss in mind, and looking back, it's a feature that made us immediately wonder why hasn't this been done before?

This is a huge accessibility win, because detecting and tracking the direction of audio such as gunfire, explosions, and enemy movement can mean the difference between emerging from a firefight victorious, or taking an L.

Black Ops 6 doesn't stop there with its auditory accessibility wins. The game also includes options to reduce tinnitus sounds (that "ears ringing" sound), and options to replace the harsh flash and concussion grenade effects with adaptive alternatives, such as flashbangs darkening screens rather than brightening them.

The game also provides audio cues to help with navigation and contextual awareness. During the more intense gameplay segments, where you need to run through chaotic scenes to an objective, these cues really helped us feel situationally in control.

Black Ops 6 also provides individual audio sliders for different sound categories, letting players to fine-tune the audio levels for things like dialogue, environmental sounds, and combat. This is a huge win in our books, because everyone's auditory needs are different. Some players might just enjoy louder dialogue for the sake of clarity and cinematic feel, while other players want the focus purely on combat sounds, to stay locked-in on the firefights.

Pretty Groundbreaking Movement Assistance

Mobility-related accessibility needs are such a huge category. You might have a limb difference, nerve-related challenges, or might just be a busy parent gaming with one hand while holding a baby. Because of how wide-reaching this category of needs is, we're always on the lookout for new and innovative accessibility support for mobility needs – and Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 absolutely delivers.

One of the most impressive new additions is the Intelligent Movement System, which is a game-changer for players with mobility-related accessibility needs. Rather than a single monolithic feature, this customizable suite of supportive features includes:

  • Sprint Assist that automatically handles running
  • Mantle Assist for climbing and traversing over obstacles (which there are tons of on maps)
  • Crouch Assist for contextually ducking behind cover
  • Corner Slice for smoother navigation around corners, making getting into (and out of) frantic firefights easier

These features significantly reduce the number of inputs required, making the game's lightning-fast action more accessible to those who struggle with rapid or repetitive button presses. These settings are also completely customizable, letting players fine-tune their experience to match their exact needs.

Black Ops 6 also offers native support for both the Xbox Adaptive Controller and Sony Access Controller right out of the box — no additional setup or steps required. We absolutely love this. This plug-and-play approach to supporting adaptive controllers is the gold standard in our opinion, as adaptive controllers are ultimately just controllers and should work instantly, like any other controller.

Fairly Comprehensive Visual Flexibility

The series' vision-related accessibility support got a major upgrade in Black Ops 6, too. The highly flexible High Contrast Mode makes a return, with additional settings to customize the color outlines of allies and enemies, set a "dark background" mask for even better contrast, and adjust the visibility of in-game elements. For players with colorblindness or limited vision, these improvements mean the difference between frustration and fluid gameplay.

The thoroughly customizable HUD layouts are another welcome addition, letting players reduce visual clutter and position on-screen information where it works best for them. This feature felt really well-implemented to us – with a clear "example HUD" visible during customization, to players know how these changes will look in-game.

Let's be real – high-octane shooters have a lot going on visually. We felt that as a whole category of support, the thoughtful visual accessibility features in COD6 can support a wide range of needs, making a what might have otherwise been an overwhelming experience actually adaptive and personalized.

Zombies Mode Is Back (And Better Than Ever)

The beloved Zombies Mode is back, and creepy spider-like enemies have arrived. But that's not all – fans with arachnophobia will greatly appreciate that you can set also use an arachnophobia mode to change their appearance without affecting gameplay at all.

While still genuinely creepy with or without this setting, enabling it will remove all legs on the spider-like mid-tier zombies, turning their torsos into floating leech-creatures. Make no mistake, whether in spider-mode or leech-mode, they're gross and ferocious – the perfect enemy to slay wave after wave of.

Even better, solo Zombies matches can now be paused and saved (!!!), letting players take breaks when needed rather than committing to potentially hours-long sessions.

This is huge for so many reasons, as pausing and saving gameplay is a universal win. It's a simple quality-of-life improvement that makes a world of difference for many players, especially as solo Zombies matches are a breath of fresh air for players who want a fun gameplay mode but might be averse to multiplayer. Sometimes you just gotta lock in, slay some zombies, and call it a day.

We had a blast

Activision's continued innovation in this space shows a genuine commitment to ensuring that one of gaming's biggest franchises remains playable by as diverse an audience as possible. We loved seeing how many features were developed in-stride with feedback from gamers with disabilities, veterans, and disability experts.

What makes Black Ops 6's accessibility approach so impressive isn't just the number of options available – which are a lot! – but rather how they're implemented. These thoughtfully designed systems preserve the core Call of Duty experience while opening it up to more players, with more diverse needs, than ever before, and none of the features felt "bolted on". Everything felt really well-integrated and deeply designed.

The game demonstrates that accessibility and intense, competitive gameplay aren't mutually exclusive. By reducing barriers without compromising the experience, Black Ops 6 sets a new standard not just for the franchise, but for first-person shooters as a whole. We love to see it.
